Darvesh Singh Yadav, the newly-elected Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh president, was on Wednesday shot dead by a fellow lawyer in the premises of the Agra civil court, police said.

ADG Agra zone Ajay Anand said Ms. Yadav was shot dead by her associate lawyer Manish Sharma during her welcome ceremony behind held at the chamber of the Bar Council. In the middle of the programme, Mr. Sharma allegedly stood up and sprayed three bullets at Ms. Yadav with his licensed pistol, said police.
She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead.
Mr. Anand said after shooting Ms. Yadav Mr. Sharma then shot himself and was in a “critical” condition.
The reason why Mr. Sharma shot Ms. Yadav is not yet known, said police.
