The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has requested AICC president Rahul Gandhi to contest from one of the Lok Sabha constituencies from Tamil Nadu, saying that he could not be confined to the state of Uttar Pradesh alone.
“There is a divide between the South and North in the country and it has increased during the five-year period of the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It could be bridged if Rahul Gandhi contests and is elected from Tamil Nadu,” TNCC president K.S. Alagiri told media.
Asked whether he had proposed the idea to Mr. Gandhi, Mr. Alagiri said he had indeed asked him to consider the request while travelling with him from Tamil Nadu to Thiruvananthapuram. “He just smiled when I told him. I will ask him again while meeting him on March 18,” Mr. Alagiri said.
He said his request to Mr. Gandhi would find great support from the secular alliance in Tamil Nadu since DMK president M.K. Stalin had already set the tone for the national politics by naming Mr. Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the secular parties.
“Mr. Gandhi remains a leader acceptable to all sections of the society. He has dedicated himself to the idea of unity in diversity. He should consider our proposal for contesting from a second seat in Tamil Nadu, in the southern part of the country, even as he contests from Amethi,” Mr. Alagiri added.
