An IPS officer, who was appointed by the Election Commission as police observer to Chidambaram constituency, has been relieved from duty after he opened fire in the air during the wee hours on Sunday.
According to sources, Hemant Kalson of Haryana cadre, came out of his suite at the Circuit House around 1 a.m. and fired nine rounds from the gun of Manibalan, an Armed Reserve constable attached to Ariyalur, who was posted for his security.
The Observer reportedly claimed that he fired in the air to check if the gun was in a working condition.
The District Election Officer M. Vijayalakshmi took up the matter to the Chief Electoral Officer in Chennai. Based on the direction, Mr. Kalson was immediately relieved from duty.
