Three persons were killed and 15 others were injured when a goods carrier overloaded with passengers overturned near Chintala on Srisailam-Dornala Ghat Road in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Narasimhacharyulu, 35 and his wife Sumalatha, 30, hailing from Raichur in Karnataka and Kuruva Thimappa from Kothapalli in Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana. While two persons died on the spot, one died while being treated at Dornala Hospital, 17 km from the spot of the accident.
The vehicle driver tried to overtake a car and in the process overturned due to lack of balance.
The condition of the injured is said to be out of danger. Dornala Sub-Inspector of Police Subba Rao and Yerragondapalem Circle Inspector Maruti said the driver of the vehicle had promised the passengers to drop them at Kurnool.
A two-tier setup was created in the goods carrier by inserting wooden planks. The Sub-Inspector said the driver was arrested, but this practice was continuing despite several efforts by Atmakur and Dornala police officials to dissuade passengers from resorting to such risky travel.
