Modi to inaugurate Kalashnikov factory in Amethi

The project, Indo-Russia Rifles Private Limited, is a joint venture between India’s Ordnance Factory and a Russian firm.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Amethi on Sunday to launch a factory that will manufacture modernised versions of the Kalashnikov rifle.
Amethi is the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress President Rahul Gandhi and Mr. Modi’s visit assumes significance in the wake of the border tensions with Pakistan.
While as per the local unit of the BJP, Mr. Modi is expected to launch and inaugurate several projects worth ₹538 crore, and the government has chosen to focus on the Kalashnikov rifles.
At the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Kauhar, Amethi, Mr. Modi will launch the production of the “latest series of the iconic Kalashnikov rifles,” his office said in a statement.
The project, Indo-Russia Rifles Private Limited, is a joint venture between India’s Ordnance Factory and a Russian firm. The PMO described it as a “milestone” in Indo-Russian cooperation and said the joint venture will give a “tremendous boost” to the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor Project, which was launched last month in Jhansi by the PM.
“In a shining example of Make in India, the joint venture will bolster the armed forces in the country and will strengthen the national security,” the PMO said.
Providing details, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said more than 7.5 lakh units of the Kalashnikov rifle would be manufactured at the factory.
Mr. Adityanath, who visited Amethi on Friday to review preparations for Mr. Modi’s visit, which would include a public meeting, said with the project “India wants to take forward the production process of latest version of AK-47 along with Russia.”
Mr. Adityanath said the projects in Amethi under the BJP would accelerate the development of the constituency, which he says had “lagged behind in the development process.”
In Amethi, Mr. Modi will also launch several development projects related to education, health, power generation and manufacturing sectors.
