Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the Aero India Show 2019 on Wednesday here on a sombre note.
On Tuesday, one pilot was killed and two others ejected to safety after two aircraft of Indian Air Force’s aerobatic team Surya Kiran crashed near the airbase at Yelahanka, a suburb of Bengaluru.
She had invited the heads of global defence aerospace companies and policy makers to make big investments in the country's two niche areas.
Several thousand delegates, exhibitors, corporates, government planners, and military brass from across the world were present at the five-day event that Bengaluru hosts every other year.
Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy highlighted Bengaluru's presence as the design, research and production hub of aerospace and defence in the country.
Mangaluru, he said, would next be developed as a defence manufacturing locale.
The chiefs of the three armed forces - Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa, Chief of the Naval Staff Sunil Lanba and Chief of Army Staff Bipin Rawat were also present.
Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre, ministers Sadananda Gowda and Suresh Prabhu, Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra, Secretary Defence Production Ajay Kumar and DRDO Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy were also at the event.
